SonyMusicStore.com are currently taking pre-orders for The Essential Bruce Springsteen (C2K 90773) that will be released on 11 November 2003, and they also published the full track listings for the three discs, which is considered the first official announcement on the tracks of the 3rd bonus disc of The Essential Bruce Springsteen.
Here's the complete 3 discs track listings (with comments on the 3rd disc tracks):
From Backstreets.com:
The Essential Bruce Springsteen (C2K 90773), a three-disc set scheduled for November 11, will present a two-disc career retrospective, plus a limited-edition bonus CD that gathers rarities along with previously unreleased tracks. The line-up for Disc Three has now been confirmed by Sony.
Filling in B-sides left off Tracks... but no 30 DAYS OUT? Airing more classic outtakes... but no THE WAY, PROTECTION, or (your favorite lost song here)? CODE OF SILENCE but no ANOTHER THIN LINE? Live cuts but no PROVE IT ALL NIGHT '78? Always leave 'em wanting more, we guess... and NONE BUT THE BRAVE alone makes us happy. But if this is "essentially" Tracks Disc Five and you've already started compiling Tracks Disc Six in your head... well, you're not alone.
With the 12 cuts above, that makes a total of 42 songs on the three-disc Essential set. Discs One and Two, with 15 songs each, present a career-spanning selection of album tracks.
Twelve of these 30 songs previously appeared on Greatest Hits. Of the remaining 18: the first five songs rectify Greatest Hits' lack of pre-1975 material; the last six songs were released after Greatest Hits; in between are seven songs that didn't make the cut for Greatest Hits, including JUNGLELAND and LIVING PROOF. (On Greatest Hits but not on Essential: MY HOMETOWN, BETTER DAYS, and Greatest Hits's four "new" songs, SECRET GARDEN, MURDER INCORPORATED, BLOOD BROTHERS, and THIS HARD LAND.) Also note: appearing here are the title tracks from every studio album from 1975 to the present.
The set will be "supported by an extensive TV campaign." Columbia also specifies that this sequence is not final (surprise, surprise)... and with Springsteen, things tend to change at the eleventh hour. If there are any last-minute tweaks, we'll post 'em here.
From SonyMusic:
The Essential set, Springsteen's first ever career-spanning collection, includes songs from every Springsteen album since his debut. Set for release on November 11, the set comes packed with a third bonus CD of rarities and previously unreleased tracks.
The Essential Bruce Springsteen, featuring two discs of Springsteen's best-known songs, is the first such collection to range from early classics BLINDED BY THE LIGHT, 4TH OF JULY, ASBURY PARK (SANDY), and ROSALITA (COME OUT TONIGHT), to his most recent hits such as MARY'S PLACE, THE RISING, and LONESOME DAY from his 2002 release The Rising.
The Essential set will also include a third, limited-edition CD with rarities and previously unreleased recordings, each one annotated by Springsteen in the album's liner notes. The bonus disc includes songs never before released commercially, including NONE BUT THE BRAVE, recorded during the Born In The USA sessions at the Hit Factory in New York City; live recordings of HELD UP WITHOUT A GUN and Jimmy Cliff's TRAPPED from the breakthrough The River tour; the acoustic, country-blues version of COUNTIN' ON A MIRACLE; a home recording of COUNTY FAIR recorded shortly after the Nebraska album; and more.
The collection is part of a series of Essential sets released by Columbia Records. Previous releases include The Essential Bob Dylan, The Essential Johnny Cash, The Essential Clash, and others. The Essential Bruce Springsteen, however, is the first in the series to include a bonus rarities disc.
