SAD EYES / BACKSTREETS

a.k.a. BACKSTREETS / SAD EYES

15 December 1978 version

Til the end
Hello baby,
Is good to see you back again
Honey you still are fine
It's been such a long long time
Baby I remember you
Baby I remember you
And I know you remember me too
And I know you you checked outside the town with someone else
And you remember that stripped down Cadillac
The one you used to take me ridin' in back
The one you used to take me ridin' in back
And I know you remember
Goin' down down and down on the inside
Slippin' down down and down to the inside
Slippin' down down and down to the inside
Slippin' down in a way that will you remember on the outside
You were cryin' in the street
On the inside
Slippin' down down and down on the outside
The cops on the corner
On the inside
Slippin' down down and down
And I remember I swore a long long time ago
I swore that for you I'd drive all night anytime anyplace
I'd drive all night
Just to buy you some shoes
Just to buy you a Christmas present
Just to check it out
Just to see how you do it
Just, just for one sweet kiss
Just for one
Just to hear you say that you love me
Now I remember that you promised
That you'd never leave without me
I remember way back then
You promised you'd never leave without me
I remember way back then you promised
And like everything else you know these days
You promised...
And you lied
You lied
Little girl you lied
Little girl you lied
So now you come back and I wanna know why
I wanna know why
I wanna know why
I wanna know why
And I wanna know just what you make you think
I mean what you make you think it's so easy
I mean just what you make you think
Just what you make you think it's so easy to
To stop me
To stop me
To stop
To stop
To stop
Stop
Stop
Stop
Stop
Stop
Stop
STOP
Hiding on the backstreets...

This interlude was sang after BACKSTREETS and evolved night by night, from 1976/1977 (where it contained some references to NEW YORK CITY SERENADE lyrics) to end 1978, throwing the base of what will later become DRIVE ALL NIGHT. It has nothing to do with SAD EYES Tracks version. Three states of this evolution are presented: 15 February 1977, 07 July 1978, 19 September 1978, 15 December 1978. An alternative version (unknown date) also exists. This song was performed massively in 1978.

These lyrics refer to the version performed on 15 December 1978 at Winterland, San Francisco, CA.

The SAD EYES interlude came to prominence during the Darkness On The Edge Of Town tour. Lyrically, it varied considerably, however it was almost always a short tale about betrayal and lost love. The cut of BACKSTREETS on the Live 1975-85 set features the SAD EYES part edited out. Quite simply, it remains a testament of Bruce's passion on stage.
